Design story: The Queen’s Hem
女王的衣角 (Nǚ Wáng De Yī Jiǎo)
Jing found her starting point in Katharine A. Carl’s 1903 portrait of Empress Dowager Cixi, now in the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Asian Art. She focused on the cascade of color, beading and layered ornament around the sitter’s robe, reimagining that opulence as long, rhythmic fringe.
